“War. War never changes.”

War may not change, but the enemies, weapons, and armor sure do! In Bethesda’s newest DLC, Broken Steel, gamers are given tougher enemies, more weapons to use, more types of armor to wear, and some more achievements. Those are just some of things you will see. You will be able to explore new locations and continue your character growth with the new level cap all while continuing the Fallout 3 story.

The biggest thing of Broken Steel is the level cap increase. The level cap was, in my eyes, a much needed increase. Now you can max your character out at level 30, and also gain some new perks. Along with the level cap, Bethesda also increased the length of each level, making it harder to level up quickly.

Other notables to the expansion are the new, more difficult enemies, and the new ending. Broken Steel picks up two weeks after the events of the main quest line. Depending on how you ended the main quest line, you may have some extra dialogue at the beginning of Broken Steel. For the most part, I felt Broken Steel did a good job transitioning between the ending of the main quest and the beginning of the DLC. Gamers can expect an additional four to five hours of game time with the extension of the story and optional side quests.

We were also presented with new and quite powerful enemies that made this expansion just a tad bit more difficult. Super mutant overlords, feral ghoul reavers, and Enclave hellfire troopers are the ones I ran across, and these new enemies are no pushovers. When facing these bad boys by yourself, have plenty of room to back-pedal. The good thing about finally killing them is the weapons you can get.

overlord

I only noticed two new weapons, but they do pack a punch for you and the enemy! The super mutant overlord is known to carry the Tri-Beam Laser Rifle, while the Enclave hellfire troops carry the Heavy Incinerator. These two weapons will probably be your preferred choices for defense.

The only downfall I seen and this may be in the original game that I did not see yet, but I started noticing some Deathclaw glitches. The first glitch I happen to see was a Deathclaw trying to become an astronaut, on more than one occasion. The other glitch happened as I was getting ready to battle a Deathclaw. As I was moving towards it and around some ruble, it just vanished. Other than that, there was nothing that took away the fun of the DLC.

All in all, Broken Steel is a must buy if you’ve enjoyed playing Fallout 3! Even with its launch bugs, that are now fixed, this DLC gives you more hours of enjoyment while scouting out new locations and weapons. Between everything that was added, and now the ability to continue traveling the wasteland, instead of locked up in Jefferson Memorial, this DLC is well worth the points. (A)

I should play this game more, I bought it, and only played the main quest for a couple of hours. I guess I just havent gotten into more open world game as of late.

From what you said, this DLC seems worth it. Might download it if and when I boot up the game again.

The weapons sound really cool, and seem like they mgiht be fun to try out. The idea of adding new enemies with more difficult AI makes me want to buy it.

Another enemy you forgot to mention is the new Albino Radscorpion. He’s tough as balls.

Nice article, BTW there are also 2 new types of flamethrowers and cool Tesla Cannon given in the last quest… It’s a really cool game, tons of hours of fun

Thanks! I never did run into an Albino Radscorpion. After I finished Broken Steel I started traveling around the western side of the Wasteland

Yeah, after I posted the article I realized I forgot to add the awesome Tesla Cannon! I love that gun, but I never ran into any other flamethrowers, but I did happen to run into an Enclave soldier firing a Precision Gatling Gun around the Evergreen Mills area.
