Review: Match Fish

Sometimes appearances can be deceiving, which is the case when it comes to Match Fish for the IPhone. At first glance, this may look like an easy puzzle game that requires little to no skill whatsoever. The easy to understand controls, calming background music, and simple concept are all a decoy. Eventually the frustration will sink in, and you will realize that this is one of the most challenging downloadable titles ever made. (more…)

Sanity Saving iPhone Games

I know last week I mentioned that I was going to share my thoughts on games that I have played during my hiatus, but because I had left my power cable at home during my vacation, I wasn’t able to share those thoughts. Now that I’m home, I want to share my thoughts on a few iPhone games that I have been playing the past few months. (more…)

Preview: Match Fish

IFun4All, the creators of one of the most fun games ever for the IPhone, Crap of Defense, are back with a title that is less about violence, and more about reflexes. Match Fish is a match 3 game in which you have to guide certain colors of fish onto a grid, and arrange them into groups of 3 at a time to earn points. As much as this feels like something that has been done already, I am sucker for these types of games, mainly because I get addicted to them very fast, and I’m sure that this one will be no exception. BattleBlasters Review Iphone

Iphone review: BattleBlasters
Littleguy Games

BattleBlasters is a one on one “fighting” game. You have a small section of real estate to move at the bottom of the screen, your opponent has the same at the top. You can only move left or right as the swipe up and down buttons are commands to shoot or shield attacks. Combat can be fast paced and hectic or slow and methodical depending on which of the six playable characters you use. You start out with two characters unlocked while the remaining will be unlocked as you play the game.

BattleBlasters Charicter Select

Now while I would not normally categorize this as a fighting game, I believe I have no other choice as there is nothing else that fits. You and your opponent can only move left and right, you have quick attacks and strong attacks with the repel/shield move. Each character has there own special move used by tapping on the character. Players must battle each of the six charicters and win to unlock the remaining. The gameplay changes depending on which soldier you are using. “Space Marine 1″ is slow moving but very powerful, while “obligatory hot chick 1″ is fast with almost no defense or power. I found each playthough taken with a completely different approach and was very please that it made me stop and rethink my play style. Multiplayer is offered and has a quirky way of playing. You and your friend each hold an end of the iPhone and control your own character. This brings to mind violence at the airport while waiting for a flight. Overall a fun experience when you have a quick minute waiting in line.

Final Fantasy I & II Coming to iPhone/iPod Touch

e-ff-a e-ffii-a

iPhone / iPod Touch users can now enjoy what started the Final Fantasy craze. Final Fantasy I & II, originally released in Japan in 1987 and 1988 (* see below), will be coming to the iTunes App Store. There has not been a release date announced yet, but some of the new features might make this a reasonable purchase if you’ve already played the two on the PSP. The new features include an optimised control system for iPhone/iPod Touch interface, enabling users to play the game as intuitively as possible by simply touching the screen. There will be additional dungeons that were not available in the original releases. Plus there will be bonus content that can be accessed once the main game is completed.

* In the early years of Final Fantasy, it was rare for North America and Japan to be on the same page. Both North America and Japan seen the release of Final Fantasy I, but North America never seen another Final Fantasy game until Final Fantasy IV (which was dubbed Final Fantasy II for us gamers in the States).

iPhone App Review: geoDefense

geodefense_1

geoDefense is by far the typical tower defense game. The thought never came to mind that I would see Geometry Wars and Tower Defense hooking up, but it did and this is its perfect offspring!

Developer: David Whatley
Publisher: Critical Thought Games
Genre: Tower Defense
Rating: 9+ (iTunes)
Price: $3.99

At first glance of the game it reminds me a bit of Geometry Wars for the XBLA. Some of the features that made Geometry Wars awesome was found in geoDefense – neon colors and exploding objects that distort the grid-tiled background. geoDefense definitely had an eye appeal to it with not much audio other than your iTunes running in the background, but what really made the game that much more fun was the levels and the difficulty of them.

Right off the bat, I was pwned by the AI on the first Easy level. Right there I knew that this game will make you think about tactics all throughout the game. Knowing the strength of each enemy, the power of your towers and thier upgrades, and where the best locations for your towers will be the key to winning each level. Even the creator knew that this game was difficult; leaving all 30 levels unlocked.

geodefense_2

What bothered me about the game is that there was no enemy counter to let you know how many you had left to kill; the only thing there was to let you know when the next wave was coming. The other pain I had was that the towers always targeted the lead enemy, unless it was out of the target area. While that is great if it worked all the time, but I found out that it was never the case. I found that the towers were more concerned about the ones just spawning than the ones getting to the “exit.” At first it was frustrating, but there is a work around to that issue; all you have to do is tap on that enemy and all the towers that the enemy travels by will target it.

All in all, geoDefense is an exotic blend of Geometry Wars and a tower defense game. If you’re a fan of tower defense games and you have an iPhone, this is a must buy, and you won’t be disappointed by the price. Hardcore tower defense fans will find this mind challenging and blast, while novice players will also enjoy the game, learning as they play. (A-)
