Ever heard of Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, or of Man with the Screaming Brain? If you haven’t, then you have either lived under a rock during the 1980′s, or you simply weren’t born yet. What do all of these movies have in common you ask, here is the answer, they all star Bruce Campbell.
Most movies that Bruce has done, other than Evil Dead, and Army of Darkness, have not seen the best of reviews from his fans, or from most critics in recent years. So what’s a guy to do, well what else would he do, make a parody movie of himself of course. And that is where this review starts, by us taking a look at his most recent film “My Name is Bruce”.
Here is the story of this movie in a nutshell, a couple of teenagers(one who is a major Campbell fanboy), decide to meet two girls in an old chinese graveyard in a small town in Oregon called Gold Lick(why they do, i have no idea), and while they are there, the fanboy takes an ancient chinese amulet from an abandonded mine, which then awakens a monster(Guan Di), who then kills everyone except him, simply because he manages to escape in time. The kid then decides to go visit Bruce Campbell, who is working on a movie at the time(Cave Alien 2), and asks him to save his town. Bruce, thinking this is a movie shoot, decides to go along with it, until he realizes that Guan Di is real, and now he is faced with the decision to save these people for real, or run away like a coward. It’s a ridiculous premise without a doubt, but it actually works pretty well for a parody type of movie.
As you can tell from the plot, this movie is going to be ridiculous, over the top, and laugh out loud funny, and honestly, this film delivers on all cylinders. Bruce’s one liners are hilarious as usual, the action scenes are over exaggerated, but just plain awesome at the same time, and the interactions between Bruce, and the other stars of this movie are believeable, if not at times a little bit ridiculous. Overall, you will enjoy this movie from beginning to end, especially if you are a fan of Bruce Campbell.
I’m not one for long detailed movie reviews, so this is where my review will end. In conclusion, My Name is Bruce is a funny, over the top, and entertaining parody movie that almost anyone can enjoy. I’d say rent it first if you are skeptical, but after you see it, you will want to buy it, enough said.
Overall grade: A
Fun Facts:
1. This movie was made in 18 days, on a $5 Million dollar budget.
2. The Gold Lick Town Set was built in a backlot in Bruce Campbell’s backyard.
That’s MY boomstick!
