Wow, this might actually be the first week that I end up choosing a VC game above the rest. There is just nothing new on either the Wiiware or DSiWare that would even remotely peak my interest. Seems like every time the Virtual Console decides to update itself, the rest of the downloadable services suffer. Oh well, either way, here is my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for September 6th, 2010. (more…)
The people over at Gaijin and Aksys games are at it once again with yet another entry in the Bit Trip series for Wiiware. Since they have already explored platforming, music, and rhythm types of games, why not make an on-rails shooter. What I have always loved about these titles is that each one has its own unique sense of style, and is a nice reminder that challenging gameplay always come first above graphics. Being reminded of what classic gaming used to be is what this is all about. (more…)
When I attended Pax East this year, there wasn’t much of a showing as far as new Wiiware games go, and I’m sure that is the case for Pax Prime as well. It’s disappointing to see the lack of support on the platform, but the bright side of this equation is that when a new game is revealed, it is usually something worth checking out. After taking a first glance at Fluidity, and all of the different ways it incorporates physics puzzles through the use of water, I was hooked. For me, something about using the tilt functionality of the Wii remote is a far more interesting concept than seeing what gimmicky gesture can be utilized in order to make a quick buck. (more…)

One of my most anticipated games this year, Epic Mickey for the Wii, is going to be a unique experience that more than likely will be worth checking out. Seems like the people over at Junction Point and Disney want to give longtime fans of the popular mascot a little something extra, if they are willing to pay for it of course. Yesterday, an announcement was made that a special collectors edition of the game will be available for $69.99 at time of release, which should be sometime during the holiday season. (more…)

With all of the big name titles coming out for the Wii this year, you would think that Nintendo would put forth more time and effort into its downloadable lineup. The truth about it though is that week after week they continue to disappoint in bringing any quality titles to the service. No matter how upset I may be about this, I’m sure that there is at least something worth playing out of the sea of crap this time around. So, without further adieu, here is my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for August 30th,2010. (more…)

I guess Nintendo really likes to mess with people, because they have a great way of releasing a bunch of great games one week, and a whole lot of crap the other. It’s a vicious cycle that seems to have no end in sight. Ironically, when things are going well, it’s almost as hard to pick something as it is when the selection is very limited. Still, one title has to be better from the rest, because not every game can win. So here it is, my pic for Nintendo Download of the Week for August 23rd, 2010. (more…)

I really want to try my best to pick out something out of the crap when it comes to this week’s Nintendo downloads, but honestly, this may just be the one time in which I pick absolutely nothing. Sure, it is somewhat understandable that the company wants to put the main focus on their newer games than the ones from the past, but when you don’t offer anything interesting on either service, the idea is pretty much shot. Just to be fair, let’s see if there is something worth playing this time around. So here it is, my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for August 16th, 2010. (more…)

Not sure what to make of the downloads on offer this time around, they range from strange to downright boring. A new entry into a popular series, that could have just been a background image on a computer, has returned, along with a massage game that was made for guys who never get any in real life. Looks like I’m going to have to swim through a sea full of shovelware crap before I find something that is even remotely worth playing. Anyways, here it is, my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for August 13th, 2010. (more…)

Now before the hate mail starts pouring in let me make one thing perfectly clear, this review has nothing to do with the Call of Duty series whatsoever. COD in this case stands for “Crap of Defense”, which is a tower defense game for the IPhone, made by the people over at IFun4All. They have just recently released an update entitled “Winter Assault”, and I have to say that even though not much has really changed on the surface, it is still an enjoyable and addictive experience nonetheless. Who needs 1080p graphics when you can see little pieces of paper blow up instead. (more…)

If anybody actually bothered to read my review on Heavy Fire: Special Operations for Wiiware, they would have found out that upon completion of the campaign, you are given a secret code. At first I thought that this was just a way to create an online leaderboard without using the Wii’s Wi-Fi connection, turns out it was meant for something else entirely. (more…)

It just seems like Nintendo has been lazy with their downloadable services as of late. Instead of delivering any type of quality title week after week, these developers and publishers tend to go with the easy way out just about every time. After taking an honest look at what’s on offer here, there is at least one game that might be worth playing. So let’s get right to it, here is my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for August 2nd, 2010. (more…)

One type of game that seems to succeed really well on the Wii is the light-gun shooter. This could have something to do with the fact that the pointer functionality on the Wii remote is deadly accurate compared to the guns from the old school arcade machines from back in the day. It also gave opportunities for series like Resident Evil, and Dead Space, to try out something new and unique with their respective franchises. Teyon has decided to jump onto the bandwagon as well by releasing their own take on the genre entitled Heavy Fire: Special Operations, exclusively for the Wiiware service. Can a game like this succeed on the downloadable front?, let’s find out. (more…)

Sometimes appearances can be deceiving, which is the case when it comes to Match Fish for the IPhone. At first glance, this may look like an easy puzzle game that requires little to no skill whatsoever. The easy to understand controls, calming background music, and simple concept are all a decoy. Eventually the frustration will sink in, and you will realize that this is one of the most challenging downloadable titles ever made. (more…)

The lineup this time around actually doesn’t look all that bad. Wiiware gets a couple of interesting new titles that look like they are worth checking out. DSiWare, as usual, gets an abundance of new releases with the possibility of only one or two of them being any good. Last, but certainly not least, the Virtual Console rises from the grave and gives us old school fans something to play as well. Recommending only one game might be a hard thing to do, but I’ll give it a shot. Here it is, my pick for Nintendo Download of the Week for July 26th, 2010. (more…)
Checking out the latest and greatest in the world of video games game can be fun, but sometimes we need a reminder of why we enjoy them so much in the first place. Before there were high res graphics, leaderboards, and gamerscores all that mattered was having a good time. Watching your friend crumble after a punishing fatality in Mortal Kombat(SNES and Genesis), or hitting a homerun in Ken Griffey Jr.’s Baseball(SNES), or finally defeating the final form of shredder in TMNT 3 (NES) are events that can only be experienced in their original form, until now.
