I have a confession to make, creative thinking is not exactly my strong suit. This is ironic because one of my favorite genres in the video game world is the puzzle genre. Stepping outside of a comfort zone, and actually using ones brain has become a thing of the past nowadays. In a world filled with mindless shooters and beat’ em ups, it’s nice a change of pace when something like Astroslugs comes along. While it may not be that complicated to play, the level of challenge on offer here will have you second guessing yourself every step of the way. (more…)
Not even sure where to begin on explaining this unique downloadable experience for Wiiware. Sometimes the off center experiences can turn out to be duds on the service, so I was a little skeptical about it at first. After spending a few minutes with Frobot however, my skepticism soon disappeared. Who knew that a robot with five girlfriends, a monster afro, and the ability to shoot lasers out of his chest could end up being so much fun. This is easily the most pleasant surprise of 2010. Sometimes writing a review can be a very difficult thing to do, especially in a situation such as this. What I mean by that is when a game combines a multitude of genres together in such a unique and creative way, it becomes hard to define exactly what it was that you just played. Creating an experience that actually lives up to the hype is a rare thing to see in this industry nowadays, but the team over at Junction Point has accomplished this feat and then some. Mickey Mouse is a hero in a different way this time around, but that’s not a bad thing at all. (more…)
Just finished weaving my way through one of the most unique and impressive titles for the Wii, and wanted to share my thoughts on it with all of you. Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a departure from what this series is known for, which may turn off some longtime fans who have grown accustomed to certain aspects of how these games should play. Don’t worry though, because these new ideas do not change the fact that this is one of the most charming titles to hit the console in recent memory. Is the little pink puffballs first adventure on this system a memorable one, or just alot of hot air? (more…)
There I was inputing my code for the prepaid Wii/DSi points card given to me for my birthday, when all of a sudden a game by the name of Paul’s Shooting Adventure catches my eye. A baby superhero saving the world from an Alien race by shooting down as many of them as possible just sounded like something that was worth playing. If not for this strange setting alone, I may have not given this more than a single look. Guess the real question here has to be, is this a fun time in the crib, or a dirty diaper that nobody wants to go near? (more…)
After spending some more time with Jam, everything that I stated in my previous article still holds true. This review will just cover the rest of the modes that are included in the game, and if they bring anything new and exciting to the overall experience. For those of you who did not take the time to read the last post, I will go over those sections very briefly as well. Well, it’s time for tip-off, so let’s hit the court and get things started. (more…)
“It is a nausiating, fun, and rewarding experience that definitely deserves to be up there with some of the best titles on the Wiiware Service” “ (A-) - Matt H.
Now before the hate mail starts pouring in let me make one thing perfectly clear, this review has nothing to do with the Call of Duty series whatsoever. COD in this case stands for “Crap of Defense”, which is a tower defense game for the IPhone, made by the people over at IFun4All. They have just recently released an update entitled “Winter Assault”, and I have to say that even though not much has really changed on the surface, it is still an enjoyable and addictive experience nonetheless. Who needs 1080p graphics when you can see little pieces of paper blow up instead. (more…)
One type of game that seems to succeed really well on the Wii is the light-gun shooter. This could have something to do with the fact that the pointer functionality on the Wii remote is deadly accurate compared to the guns from the old school arcade machines from back in the day. It also gave opportunities for series like Resident Evil, and Dead Space, to try out something new and unique with their respective franchises. Teyon has decided to jump onto the bandwagon as well by releasing their own take on the genre entitled Heavy Fire: Special Operations, exclusively for the Wiiware service. Can a game like this succeed on the downloadable front?, let’s find out. (more…)
Sometimes appearances can be deceiving, which is the case when it comes to Match Fish for the IPhone. At first glance, this may look like an easy puzzle game that requires little to no skill whatsoever. The easy to understand controls, calming background music, and simple concept are all a decoy. Eventually the frustration will sink in, and you will realize that this is one of the most challenging downloadable titles ever made. (more…)
As the title of the game implies, Quickpick Farmer is one of those games that doesn’t last too long, but is still fun nevertheless. It’s a simple and accessible title that is perfect for people who are looking for something to do if they’ve got a few minutes to kill. The idea of putting sheep into containers, and using their wool to shoot into barns for points may sound like animal cruelty to some, but the light-hearted tone of the whole experience more than makes up for it. That being said, even the most experienced gamers reflexes will be tested here, so don’t let your guard down for one second. Get those sewing needles ready, because you’re going to need them. (more…)
I’m all for games that take chances with their design and gameplay ideas, but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the tried and true, and Jett Rocket does just that. Shin’en offers something that Wiiware has been lacking for quite some time, which is a true 3D platformer that is as beautiful to look at as it is fun to play. Seasoned gamers may be turned off by how short lived this experience is, but for those people who choose to go along for the ride, they will not be disappointed. So fuel up that jetpack, and get ready to collect those solar panels, because it’s time to save the world. (more…)
It’s been awhile since I’ve played anything for the DS, and even longer for the DSiWare service. Then just the other day, something on there caught my eye. It was a game that mixed the elements of a rhythm based music experience with that of a traditional platformer. Throw a little bit of classical music into the mix, and you got one of the most unique downloadable titles that this system has to offer. Maestro! Green Groove is an interesting experiment that ends up being a unique type of game that gamers from all walks of life can play. (more…)
Ok, now this was a long time coming. Anybody out there who knows which type of gamer I am will immediately understand when I say that Mario Galaxy 2 is the best Wii game out there right now. All of the new challenges, powerups, boss fights, and gameplay mechanics have been improved in a big way, along with a few other changes. This is a big leap forward for the platforming genre, and in every way an experience that no one with a heart should pass up. (more…)
